1-Click PrestaShop Install? Am I crazy?
Well up until today, you could have said I was off my rocker. PrestaShop installs are not easy and certainly not 1-click easy. That is until now.
I just had the pleasure of finding out that PrestaShop is now available in my Bluehost C-Panel in the SimpleScripts section. If you are not familiar with SimpleScripts, according to its website, it is a “one-click installer for blogs, photo galleries, forums, and more.”
There are a number of programs (scripts) in the Bluehost SimpleScripts section such as WordPress, Dupral, Joomla, RoundCube, Magento, ZenCart, Moodle, PHP Bulletin, and about 50 more according to the Bluehost website. All of these programs can be installed with the push of one button in addition to telling the installer where you want to put the program.
Even more impressive is that most of these programs can be updated with 1-click. Unfortunately, that is not possible for Prestashop yet.
A 1-click install is absolutely amazing considering how difficult PrestaShop can be to install. I was just checking the videos I created on downloading and installing PrestaShop and I have approximately 40 minutes of tutorials dedicated to the subject. Installation usually takes between 20 and 40 minutes depending on how fast you can download and upload files and also on how experienced you are.
Now, you can install Prestashop in Bluehost in less than five minutes and you don’t have to deal with the normal headaches of creating a database, setting file permissions, and deleting any folders or files. It actually only took me two minutes, so I’m giving a little wiggle room for inexperienced users.
When you go from the normal install process to 1-click installs, it will blow your mind and you’ll probably wind up on the floor giggling and spinning in circles with joy. Amazing, simply amazing.
In my opinion, the next big challenge that PrestaShop must overcome to have better market penetration is creating a 1-click update.
Quite frankly, the update process is one of the most awful experiences I’ve had in a while. And, unless this process is improved, there is simply no way it won’t hurt PrestaShop’s success in gaining market acceptance. Their software just isn’t that good that most people would overlook something like this.
Just to be clear, when I speak of a 1-click update, I’m talking about creating a way to upgrade that would be similar to WordPress. If your not familiar with WordPress, when they come out with an update, you push one button for the install and you’re done. It is amazingly simple and the way it should be!
I’m exaggerating just a bit about the “push one button” part, though. You should always back up your database no matter what program you’re working in, so there really is more to do than push one button, but not much more. And, since you should be backing up any program prior to an update, I don’t count it as an extra step. It’s like breathing – you just need to do it, or you will probably die:)
However, I did not find it in the Hostgator system. They don’t use SimpleScripts. That’s a bummer because Hostgator is just as good of a host as Bluehost is. Having Prestashop available for 1-click installs on Hostgator is going to be incredible when it happens, and I’m hoping it will happen at some point soon.
If you didn’t notice, I like both Bluehost and Hostgator. They are both tremendously responsive shared hosts. As long as a shared host is appropriate for your store, which it should be for the vast majority of small to medium Prestashop stores, there is no doubt in my mind that these two hosts are the best hosts for Prestashop in the US.
So, if you’re looking for a good host that has a 1-click install for PrestaShop, I’m giving the nod to Bluehost. I’m only giving Hostgator second place because they don’t offer that service yet. In all other respects, I believe Hostgator to be just as good a shared web host as Bluehost.
You might notice that I’ve included clickable links in this article and some of them are affiliate links to Bluehost and Hostgator. If you are thinking about getting a web host and you feel this article and video provided you with value, I would appreciate it if you clicked through those links. I get a commission if you sign up, which helps keep this blog going.
If you are interested in signing up for one of the hosts I mentioned, you might want to review a couple resource pages I created to help you understand a bit more about domain names and hosting services. Take a moment and educate yourself before you make any choices.
