Enable GZIP Compression and Browser Caching for your PrestaShop Store

by Curt Donohue on January 31, 2011

What is GZIP compression and browser caching your ask?  Well, if you are for looking for ways to improve the performance of your PrestaShop store, enabling GZIP compression and browser caching will be very important to you.

I’m pretty sure I can safely say that anyone with a PrestaShop store would love to provide their customers the fastest shopping experience possible.  Customers who can navigate your site faster could mean more conversions.

With extensive help from Nethercott Constructions, I’ve created a two-part video tutorial on how to do the following things to help make your store run faster and provide a better customer experience:

  1. Create a .htaccess file and upload it to your web host
  2. Enable GZIP compression for versions 1.3 and 1.4
  3. Enable browser caching for versions 1.3 and 1.4
  4. Enable ETags for versions 1.3 and 1.4

Please be aware that implementing GZIP and browser caching does not guarantee that your PrestaShop store will run faster, but it sets the stage so that it can run much faster if your customer’s browser requests compressed files and they can cache files, scripts, and images on their computer instead of downloading new versions each time they refresh their screen.

Below is the text file of code that I mentioned in Part 2 that you can use to set up GZIP compression and browser caching in version 1.3.  To download the file, right-click on the link and then click “Save Link As…”
