Remove “There are No Products” Text

by Curt Donohue on March 14, 2011

Do you have text on your PrestaShop store pages that says “There are no products?”  Would you like to get rid of that text?  I’ve had to deal with this issue on a website and decided to make a video to help those of you with the same problem.

If you are not familiar with this issue, it occurs when you set up a category and have a sub-category below without any products.  For instance, I created a category called “Eminence,” which is a manufacturer of organic skin care products.  I then created categories below called “Cleansers,” “Eye Care,” “Body Lotions,” etc…  The customer is supposed to select one of those categories to either go onto another category selection or the actual products.

When I clicked on the Eminence category, it took me to that screen and it displayed the sub-categories that I had set up.  There were, however, no products set up at that level nor would there ever be.  Because there weren’t any products here, PrestaShop placed warning text near the top of the page that said “There are no products.”  It is obvious that there are no products at this level, so the statement “There are no products” is exceptionally unhelpful and potentially costly in lost sales.

I had someone review the progress of my website and they noticed this warning text.  They told me it didn’t look very good to have a statement that said there are no products in an on-line store.  I had to agree and I decided to figured out how to change that text to make it a more accurate statement.

There actually were products in the store, they just weren’t at that level in the category tree, which only showed a selection of sub-categories.  Thus, I decided to change the text to say “Please select a category below.”  This looks tremendously better and does eliminates a potentially negative and inaccurate statement that can lose sales.

The following video will show you how I changed “There are no products” to “Please select a category below.”

Great Video mate.. Keep it up… Can I embed this video on my site?

Curt Donohue June 14, 2011 at 5:49 pm

Thanks Nash. You have my permission to embed the video, but I’m not sure my video player will let you. You might want to search for that title on You Tube. I think I have it uploaded there as well and it might be easier for you to embed it that way. If you can’t find it let me know and I’ll figure something out.
